Tips from the Inside
Each month, we will feature an inside tip from a member of our coaching staff who you may recognize when you call our toll-free number. Did you know that collectively the more than 40 coaches answering your calls and emails have participated in more than 65 Breast Cancer 3-Days? We are all here to ensure your success and would like to share some of our most successful, fun and popular fundraising and training ideas.

Leslie Gambrell

Hello, my name is Leslie Gambrell and I have been a Breast Cancer 3-Day coach for the past two years. I love making participants' lives richer and easier. Here are my tips for successful fundraising and training. Hopefully they will inspire you!

Fundraising Tip: If you are hesitant about asking people for money, I have the best fundraising tool for you, walker business cards. You can find these at Participant Center > Fundraising, in the Downloads section.

These business cards come five to a sheet of paper and they are very simple to use. All you do is print the PDF file, hand write your name, city and team name and take it to your local copy shop and make as many copies of it as you can. Many participants like to have them printed on pink paper to represent the fight against breast cancer. Once you have your copies, just cut the individual cards and carry them with you wherever you go. You can share them with friends and family members and they can share these with their contacts. Keep them handy in your wallet, purse, even in your fanny pack while you train. Not only are these business cards a great fundraising tool, they will also help spread the word about the great work that you and every other Breast Cancer 3-Day participant are doing!

Training Tip: We at the Breast Cancer 3-Day like to say that the difference between surviving the event and enjoying the event is TRAINING! Now is not the time to start a low carbohydrate diet, try to cut calories drastically or do anything that your body is not used to. You will be increasing your endurance during every training walk you take so know that your body needs to have the right fuel to keep you going. When you are on-event we will have snacks, sports drinks and water available every two to three miles. Make sure you follow these guidelines when you train. It will help keep you hydrated and provide you with the energy you will need to keep walking!

Ariane Slutzky

Hi! My name is Ariane Slutzky and I have been a Breast Cancer 3-Day coach for over two years. I love being a source of inspiration and faith while helping you thrive with your fundraising and training! Here are some tips that can support your journey.

Fundraising Tip: One of my walkers raised over $5000 each year for several years in a row with this technique: He would purchase several Breast Cancer 3-Day T-Shirts from http://www.3DayGear.com/, and on a weekend afternoon he’d wear the T-Shirt to a store.

He enjoyed talking to people and had a very warm personality, so after getting the OK from the manager, he’d approach a shopper in the store and talk to them about the Breast Cancer 3-Day. He was passionate about the event, after watching his Mom suffer through breast cancer, so he didn’t have to do anything fancy, he just shared his story. He was going to walk 60 miles and raise money to help save lives in honor of his Mother. Then, he’d tell the person he had approached, “For $5, you can sign my T-Shirt and I’ll walk your name every mile.”

Of course the shoppers were moved by the thought of being a part of the journey, and by his desire to help. And $5 was an easy donation, especially since they were shopping anyway. He did this every weekend, with a new Breast Cancer 3-Day T-Shirt, and easily went above the minimum because the donors very often gave much more than $5. It’s a simple idea, but so effective!

Training Tip: With all the walking you’re going to do, it’s a great idea to include some cross-training once or twice a week. Gentle yoga or Pilates can be very helpful in increasing flexibility and strength for your joints, bones and muscles, while also reducing stress and tension. Swimming in the warmer months can provide all over body conditioning that is non-impact and yet is excellent for cardiovascular strength, stamina and endurance, which is key to your enjoyment and success during your Breast Cancer 3-Day journey!

Meet a Volunteer Training Walk Leader
Vikki Crowley Greetings Breast Cancer 3-Day walkers and crew! My name is Vikki and I am training for my sixth Breast Cancer 3-Day this July. I live outside of Boston, MA and have been a training walk leader for the past three years. I am a breast cancer survivor but lost my sister to breast cancer in 2005. My aunt continues to struggle with the disease. My motto? “I refuse to let this disease WIN!” I am a fighter and will continue until I do that final walk - the walk that says “The cure is found! No more tears, no more pain, no more cancer!”
Fundraising Tip: I know that fundraising can make some feel uncomfortable but you never know who has been affected by breast cancer. Don’t be afraid to ask. People are very understanding, caring and giving.

Training Tip: Please remember to stretch, hydrate, stretch some more and hydrate again. Enjoy the walk and remember: it’s a walk, not a race!

Participant Center Tips: Donor Receipts, Self-Donations
All donors who provide a valid email address will automatically receive a receipt via email. However, you can reprint a donation receipt at any time in your Participant Center. Just log in to your Participant Center, go to the My Progress section and scroll down to your Donation History. Each donation will have a “Receipt” link.

If a donor gives you cash, you have two options. 1: Write a check to the Breast Cancer 3-Day for the donation amount and mail it in with your personalized donation form. Put the donor’s contact information on the form so they can be properly acknowledged. 2: Make an online donation using your credit card for the donation amount. Please put the donor’s contact information, including their email address, in the Donor Information section. Your contact information goes in the Billing Information section. It is very important that you do not put your own email address in the donor email address field.

If you do not know the donor’s email address, please enter a fake email address using the following convention: first initial+last name+zip code@noemail.com. Please enter this type of unique address to prevent their transaction from being associated with a pre-existing record in our database. If a fake email is given, no receipt will be emailed out and you can print a receipt for the donor from your Participant Center.
