Tips from the Inside Each month, we feature an inside tip from a member of our coaching staff who you may recognize when you call our toll-free number or send us an email. Here’s what Susan and Suzanne would like to share this month…
 |
Hi! My name is Susan, and I’ll be participating in my third Breast Cancer 3-Day in Atlanta this year.
Training Tip: When training, it is important to use the gear that you are planning on using on event. By training with your gear, you’ll learn whether that fanny pack is comfortable, if that water bottle is going to poke you in the back for 20 miles, etc. The same goes for shirts, shorts, pants, socks, and shoes too. |
|
I learned that what worked well for me on my first event didn’t work at all on my second. So test things out. Also, don’t forget about using the expertise (and discount!) that the Breast Cancer 3-Day outfitters can provide.
Fundraising Tip: Many people have great success with garage sales. We all have lots of stuff around the house that we don’t use, need or want anymore. Try to make the setting really fun with decorations. Advertise that all proceeds will go to the Breast Cancer 3-Day. You’ll be amazed at what people are willing to pay for your stuff when you let them know that their money is going to such a good cause. One of my teammates even got a $100 donation from a man whose mother was a breast cancer survivor. You never ever know whose path you will cross along your Breast Cancer 3-Day journey. |

Hello! I'm Suzanne Rose, a coach for the Breast Cancer 3-Day.
Fundraising Tip: One of my favorite fundraising ideas is becoming a walking billboard. Here is how you do it: You can purchase an official Breast Cancer 3-Day t-shirt from 3DayGear.com or even use an old plain t-shirt and go to a fabric store such as Michael’s and get a large amount of pink ribbon for a low price. You can then sell the pink ribbons, have people write messages on them and then pin them to your shirt. |
|
You can even charge a different price for larger ribbons so companies can have their named clearly displayed. Wear your newly decorated t-shirt often as it will start to attract attention, and create more pink ribbon sales. Before you know it, you will have a t-shirt that is covered with pink ribbons creating your own walking billboard for breast cancer awareness. Keep your donation forms handy at all times because you never know when you’ll bump into someone who wants to contribute to your shirt. If your t-shirt fills up, don’t stop! You can make one for the second and third day of the event.
Training Tip: Walk in the clothes you are training in. Don’t save your new shirt or shorts for the day of the event as you don’t know how they will feel when walking 60 miles. (If you do my fundraising tip, keep in mind that the extra ribbons and pins may create extra weight.) Also, train with your water bottle fanny pack. This is extra weight you may not anticipate if you do not train with it. Rotate the placement of your water bottle every couple of miles so one side of your body doesn’t get too heavy. It can also cause bruising if it is in one place for an extended period of time. While you're walking, remember to drink and drink and drink (water and sports drink) and always remember to have fun! |
Phase 1 of Online Check-In is Open Our online check-in process allows you to complete your check-in for the Breast Cancer 3-Day on your computer before the event. Phase 1 of online check-in involves completing an important medical history form and waiver of liability. Follow this link to proceed to Phase 1 of online check-in.
Phase 2 of online check-in opens on August 3rd. At that time, if you've completed Phase 1 and your medical history form has been cleared by our medical records staff, you will receive an email inviting you to complete Phase 2.
Make Your Travel Plans Whether you’re coming from out of town or are a local resident, you’ll want to visit the Event Info webpage to view travel information for the Breast Cancer 3-Day. As we finalize details about local hotels, shuttle options and ceremonies locations, they will be posted in this area. Some of the information is already available. So check the Travel Information link today and start making your hotel reservations and planning your carpool.
Official Breast Cancer 3-Day Credentials This year, we're introducing an exciting new change to the online check-in process. Once you have completed online check-in, you will be able to print your official event credential at home before the event.
After you complete online check-in, we will process your credential and post it on your online check-in confirmation page for you to print. You will be notified by email when your credential is ready for printing. Printing your credential at home before the event will allow you to show up at the Opening Ceremony without waiting in any long check-in lines.
You must be wearing your credential in order to walk on the route and receive services at the Breast Cancer 3-Day pit stops and camp. Once you print the credential, cut on the dotted line and insert your credential into the plastic sleeve that was sent to you with your milestone badge. If you have lost the plastic sleeve or the black lanyard attached to it, you may pick up an extra when you arrive at the Opening Ceremony.
Send Some Love Back Home While you're on the Breast Cancer 3-Day, stop by the computer stations in the 3-Day Cafe to send an eCard to your friends, family and donors. Don't forget to bring your email address book to the event so you can send an update to everyone to thank them for their support and let them know how you are doing.

So set your fundraising goals high and you could be the star in your own big tent.

On-Event Clothes Check Volunteers This year on the San Francisco Bay Area Breast Cancer 3-Day we are offering something a little different for our walkers. Wearing layers is a necessity in the Bay Area because the temperature here changes so quickly. So if you want to shed any extra layers while walking, volunteers will collect your clothing and return it to camp. If you know anyone who would like to help us with “clothes check” please contact Crew & Volunteer Coordinator Jordan Byron at jbyron@event360.com.
Meet a Volunteer Training Walk Leader
 |
My name is Laura and I reside in Portland, OR. I will be serving as a crew member on the 2009 Seattle Breast Cancer 3-Day and am also training for the 2009 events in San Francisco, Denver, and Arizona. I have been a crew member, walker and volunteer at many previous Breast Cancer 3-Days and have been a training walk leader several times as well. |
|
I first joined the Breast Cancer 3-Day back in 1999, in part to celebrate having finished my PhD, and in part because I don’t run, I don’t bike, and I don’t play golf - so I could never do those kinds of fundraising events. I saw a poster about walking 60 miles, and I thought, “That’s ABSURD! But I CAN walk.” I walked because breast cancer is every woman’s issue. At that time, I didn’t know anyone with breast cancer. In the years since that first Breast Cancer 3-Day, I learned that my aunt is a breast-cancer survivor; my stepmother has survived breast cancer; I’ve lost a friend to it; I’ve lost a student to it; I had a suspicious mammogram myself once I turned 40 and started having them.
I got my start as a training walk leader when the woman who led my local training walks got plantar fasciitis and asked if I could take over her June walks. So I led walks for her in June…and July…and August…and September…and the beginning of October. Through those walks, I learned the value of training on different surfaces and including hills. When I signed up to walk the Seattle Breast Cancer 3-Day, I knew there would be hills there. So I call my walks the “Get Your Hills In” walks.
I love helping new people learn about the Breast Cancer 3-Day, and I love getting walkers to tell their stories. I love building a community of people who see each other during the Breast Cancer 3-Day and stay in touch afterwards. The 3-Day is a great event, and even if I’m not walking it this year, I’m going to lead as many training walks as I can!
Fundraising Tip: Combine resources and host a fundraiser with your team. Also use the "personal URL" feature on the Breast Cancer 3-Day website to include a small version of the link to your personal page in your email signature.
Training Tip: Get your hills in! |
Training Walks Official Breast Cancer 3-Day training walks are led by walkers and crew members just like you who have volunteered their time to help their fellow participants train. Click here to search for a training walk near you. You can enter your zip code and a radius to search within. You can also narrow down your search by date, but keep in mind that in order you see the most results possible, you should widen the dates of your search. (For example, if you want to find walks on August 9, enter August 8 - August 10 as the date range, not August 9 - August 9.) Click on the name of the walk in the search results list to see details and RSVP for that walk.
If you have RSVPd for a training walk and find you are unable to attend, please return to the training walk listing and click "Cancel my RSVP." On the next screen, you will need to select "Attending=No" and submit the form in order to properly update your RSVP. Please, for the sake of our volunteer training walk leaders, RSVP for walks you plan to attend and cancel RSVPs for walks you do not plan to attend, so the leader may plan accordingly.
Training Fatigue The Breast Cancer 3-Day may seem like a long way off. If you've been training for a while now, you may be hitting a wall. Here are some tips to combat training fatigue:
- Vary your training route. You're probably tired of the view of your own neighborhood. Get in your car and drive to another town. When's the last time you walked around your nearest big city? You'll see a lot more on foot than you do from the window of your car during your morning commute.
- Find a new training partner. Search for a training walk or use the share list to find a new group to train with. Nothing makes the miles fly by like a conversation with a new friend.
- Get some new gear. Visit a Breast Cancer 3-Day outfitter or go to 3DayGear.com and start shopping. Suddenly, you may be looking for a reason to try out those new walking shoes or show off that new shirt.
Get Started Meetings If you haven’t already, come join us for an inspiring meeting (held via phone conference) that will get you ready for the Breast Cancer 3-Day. At a Get Started Meeting, you’ll learn how to fundraise “The 3-Day Way,” get some key training tips and much more.
