The 2008 Results Are In
On behalf of everyone at Susan G. Komen for the Cure® and National Philanthropic Trust, we want to thank you for your efforts. Your dedication directly impacts the work we do and the programs we support. Please follow this link to take a look at the 2008 Breast Cancer 3-Day Report Card and remember that these life-changing programs exist in large part because of the millions of dollars raised by you.

The majority of the funds are allocated toward innovative breast cancer research. As you know, every major advance in the fight against breast cancer over the last 27 years has been impacted by a Susan G. Komen for the Cure grant. Research benefiting from these grants will speed the translation of discoveries into reductions in breast cancer mortality and/or incidence within the next decade as well as address disparities in breast cancer across populations. In addition, the remainder of funds was distributed to Komen's network of Affiliates, which provide grants to directly support people in need - awareness, education, screening, treatment and support programs. The monies given to the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund provided dollars for treatment, prevention and education initiatives focused on underserved communities.

Breast Cancer 3-Day Logo Available as a Widget
What is a widget? A widget is a clickable graphic element on a website. What does this mean for you? You can put a Breast Cancer 3-Day widget on your personal website (such as a blog, MySpace or Facebook page) or in your emails (if using Outlook or another email program that allows html signatures). This widget will display your Breast Cancer 3-Day fundraising goal and link directly to your personal fundraising webpage. Click here to visit the Widgets page. And while you’re at it, check out the official Breast Cancer 3-Day MySpace and Facebook pages.

Be an Ambassador for the Breast Cancer 3-Day
Every participant in the Breast Cancer 3-Day has a special reason for why they joined this event. What's yours? We’re looking for Ambassadors with inspirational and motivating stories to share with local newspapers, radio and television stations. You’ll be contacted to share your personal experiences with reporters who are covering the Breast Cancer 3-Day before and during the events.

If you would be interested in being a spokesperson for the Breast Cancer 3-Day, please complete the Ambassador Information Form located on the Fundraising page. (You must be logged in to view it.)

Complete the Ambassador Information Form to the best of your ability and email it to PRteam@barkleyus.com or fax it to 816.423.7191. Please specify which Breast Cancer
3-Day location you are referring to in the subject line.

Message Boards
The message boards provide participants with an opportunity to learn new fundraising ideas, share training tips and experience the community of the Breast Cancer 3-Day prior to the event. While the message boards provide an opportunity for participants to support each other, your coaches are also ready to help. The Breast Cancer 3-Day coaches can be reached at 800.996.3DAY or coaches@the3day.org.

Please be respectful and save the message boards for Breast Cancer 3-Day correspondence only. Thank you for your commitment to creating a world without breast cancer!

Participant Center Tips: Donor Notes, Team Messages
When a donor makes an online donation, she/he has the option to enter a personal message to the participant being supported. To view these messages, go to the “My Progress” tab in your Participant Center. Scroll to the bottom of the page and select the desired function under the Actions column, next to each donation listed.

Team captains can send special messages to their teammates from the Participant Center home page. If you’re a team captain, you’ll see a box to type in a special message of encouragement to your team. You can continually update the message to keep it current - listing upcoming team meetings, training walks or fundraising events. If you're a team member, you'll see that message on your Participant Center home page.

Help Recruit Our Medical Crew
Of all the Breast Cancer 3-Day Crew Teams there is none more crucial to the success and safety of the event than our Health Services Team. Our Crew & Volunteer Coordinators are busy preparing for this amazing 60-mile journey and we need your help. We are seeking: Doctors (MD or DO), Nurses, Emergency Medical Technicians, Paramedics, Physician Assistants, Physical Therapists, Certified Athletic Trainers and Chiropractors.  This team of health services professionals provides care and support to the walkers in a mobile medical unit, on the route as well as in camp.  If you or someone you know has the appropriate qualifications, and are licensed in the state where the Breast Cancer 3-Day takes place, please urge them to call 800.996.3DAY and register for the Breast Cancer 3-Day Medical Crew today.

Tips from the Inside
Each month, we will feature an inside tip from a member of our coaching staff who you may recognize when you call our toll-free number. Did you know that collectively the more than 40 coaches answering your calls and emails have participated in more than 65 Breast Cancer 3-Day events? We are all here to ensure your success and would like to share some of our most successful, fun and popular fundraising and training ideas.

Kristin Harris

My name is Kristin and I’ve been a coach with the Breast Cancer 3-Day for five years and I’d like to share with you some short and sweet tips!

Fundraising Tip: A car wash can be successful but here’s the key: hold it at an established car wash, rather than doing it yourself. Go to a local car wash on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. Talk to the manager about what you’re doing. Ask them if they’re willing to help you out and donate some of their proceeds for a few days of washes.

Make up flyers to hand out to the patrons at the car wash. Usually the gentleman that dries the car at the end will help you out with this. The flyers should tell the patrons that on a certain future date(s), you will be back to collect donations for the cause. Don’t forget to put your website address and name at the bottom of the flyer in case people want to donate on another day or if they want to tell their friends!

On the day of your fundraiser, make up a festive pink donation can; the more entertaining the better. You can even dress up to make the event more lively. People will pay you just for making them laugh! Plus, with a little extra effort, the manager just might match your donations ($1.00 per car, for example). Now this doesn’t sound like much, but there are many people who have their cars cleaned each and every week, so those people will be your best customers.

Training Tip: Just do it! Don’t panic if you can’t follow the guidelines exactly. The important part is to increase your stamina and endurance a little each day. Walking is the best training, but you can supplement it with other activities like yoga, Pilates, playing ball with the kids, swimming or whatever else strikes your fancy.

Nina Griffith

My name is Nina Griffith and I am a Breast Cancer 3-Day Coach. I am here to inspire and motivate you for this incredible journey. Here are some helpful tips I have picked up to share with you.

Fundraising Tip: Make a simple T-Shirt that says “ASK ME WHAT I’M TRAINING FOR” in big letters. Wear this every time you go to the gym, every time you go on a walk or go to the store. Wear it everywhere. You will be surprised at how many people cannot resist asking you about your shirt. You will even be surprised at how many strangers will want to give you a donation!

Be prepared at all times to pass out your Breast Cancer 3-Day business card or donation form. (Business cards can be found on the Fundraising page.) This is probably the most effortless thing you can do, and it works!

Training Tip: If you have a dog, walk it a lot! You can get some great training miles in, while giving your dog the exercise it needs and will enjoy. Whenever you go out, try to park in the furthest parking spot you can. Take the kids to a park and walk around it while they play. And don’t forget to wear your “Ask me what I'm training for” T-Shirt!

Meet a Volunteer Training Walk Leader

Mike Krajewski

My name is Mike Krajewski and I am training for my second Cleveland Breast Cancer 3-Day. I walk in honor of my two aunts and in memory of my Mom who lost her battle 12 years ago. I walked last year and the training walk leaders were a big help with advice, so I want to pass that along to other new walkers.

Fundraising Tip: Ask big! You’d be surprised at how often you’ll get that dollar amount. If you don’t get the amount you’re asking for, at least you’re not leaving money on the table, so to speak.

Training Tip: Stretch, stretch, stretch, hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Stretch properly, thoroughly and more than you think you need to, especially on longer training walks. Pay special attention to stretching your hamstrings, glutes and lower back.

During the Breast Cancer 3-Day, there will be pit stops with crew members to remind you to stop and stretch and stay properly hydrated. We (the training walk leaders) will remind you on training walks but be sure to stop to stretch thoroughly every 3-4 miles and drink at least 16-20 ounces of fluids per hour - more if it’s hot. Even in cooler weather, make sure to hydrate. You may ignore being thirsty in cooler weather because you may not sweat as much.
