We got a permit from our borough and permission to stand in front of a local hotel near a traffic light; we had several "pink boots" (rain boots spray painted pink, pink timberlands, etc) and made signs (picket-style) and collected spare change donations.

First time we did this we raised over $2000!, we have had varied success with subsequent events but have always made over $300. The permit cost $25 but our borough donated it. The first was a huge success becaue we had numerous helpers and boots, easier to catch all cars because we could spread out more.
