August 2 - 4, 2013
The 2013 Susan G. Komen Cleveland 3-Day began as the sun rose on a bright Friday morning over Dock 32 overlooking the beautiful city of Cleveland. We stretched and warmed up to the music, then Dr. Sheri set the crowd on fire after a stirring tribute to the flag bearers and those whom we had lost to breast cancer. We all moved quickly out onto the streets of Cleveland, passing by the city's major sports stadiums. We continued west into the beautiful lakeside neighborhoods of Lakewood and Rocky River before entering camp at Westlake Recreation Center. We were treated to a program by Amanda Joy Hall and the Charlotte Braun Dance Studio, both local performers, and heard from Dr. Sheri and Komen 3-Day sponsors Bank of America and New Balance before retiring to our tents, protected from the rain.
Saturday's 21.5-miles started with overcast skies which fortunately turned quickly to blues skies and pleasant temperatures. We enjoyed several private cheering stations from residents in the Bay Village and were pumped up by the cheerleaders of Bay High School. Local car dealerships passed out frozen pink wristbands, chilled fruit and chocolate. Rocky River Presbyterian Church provided one of the largest cheering stations, and we continued on through the Rocky River neighborhoods and browsed the Old River Shopping Area. The New Balance cheerleaders of Shaker Heights entertained us with their precision cheering. Many homes opened their yards to us as we passed through the Westlake community. Back at camp, we enjoyed an evening with family and friends in a special Saturday afternoon family block party. Local dance group Versatility provided excellent entertainment before a program featuring the Youth Corps and several stories from survivors.
On Sunday, we were treated to beautiful sunrise after some light showers overnight and made our way onto our 16.9-mile route. The North Olmstead, Berea, Middleburg Heights, and Parma neighborhoods offered many private cheering stations with cold drinks and food. A large crowd from the community, including our friends and family, gathered at Cuyahoga Community College to to celebrate the end of our 60-mile journey.
The money we raised will help Susan G. Komen® save lives.
