Some thought it was crazy enough (including me) that someone in their 50s would walk 60 miles in 3 days. But when my sister, Terry, was diagnosed with breast cancer, I knew I had to get off that couch.
Now I am marking the 21st anniversary of that 1st Walk by walking 60 miles in 3 days. Again. At least that's the plan.
I am writing this even before walking my 20th anniversary for San Diego's 2023 Walk. I am happy to report Terry is still going strong as a survivor. But in 2023 she also kicked uterine cancer's tail. My warrior sister!
I also learned in 2023 of three more women friends being diagnosed with breast cancer and other forms of cancer, Stop! Please!
My 1st 3-Day Walk was in 2003 - the same year Susan G. Komen took over the event. I had moved back to my beloved San Diego in January of that year.
Since then, I have learned of too many friends and colleagues who have/had breast cancer. As if I needed any other motivation to keep this Old Lady Walking, my niece, Renee, was diagnosed months before the 2019 Walk.
I say enough! We have to stop cancer. Once. And. For. All.
So, once again (the good Lord willing), I will join the very special ladies who walked into my life as teammates and stay forever in my heart. Our Pink Tahoe Ladies include three breast cancer survivors and a few of us who had other forms of cancer.
Cancer isn't done yet and neither am I.
My contributors round out my circle of support. Many of them have been with me from the 1st walk through today. Their generosity and spirit of giving humble me. I am so grateful to all of you.
As long as this Old Lady Walking body will carry me, I am walking 60 miles in 3 days with the hope we find a cure for cancer soon. If you can donate to help me continue this journey of the heart, I would be very appreciative.
Walk on!
